Slow Stitch Stories

I began my slow stitch stories during the early days of 2020.  I found myself with a severe case of painter's block, and turned to the ancient art of slow stitching and the more recent (but really ancient as well, let's face it) concept of fabric upcycling to help calm and soothe my nerves.  The actions of making small stitches on the various fabrics I found in rag bags and closets was very much like meditation.

I embellished the 5" x 5" fabric squares that I ripped from a pair of my husband's old jeans with hand painted embroidery thread, layered vintage kimono and my mother-in-law's kente fabric, pieces of old curtains, remnants from sewing projects over the years, old cushion covers, my grown kid's tween t-shirts and pajamas, beads, wool roving, and hand dyed cheesecloth.  I called these small fabric creations "slow stitch stories." They can be found, with a description of what each one was made from, on my Instagram account: SlowStitchStories -
